Description The introduction of your essay should briefly summarize the novel, mentioning the key moments in the narrative, and then explain what makes the novel a work of realism as opposed to romanticism (again, think in structural binary opposites). Please quote and cite passages to support your analysis For the first part of the essay, critique two of the novel’s characters in terms of existentialism. You can choose which two characters to analyze. The analysis should be about whether these characters control the outcomes of their lives through the notion of free will and living to their potential. Or are they fated to end up without any opportunity to change or dictate their outcome? Again, quote and cite passages from the novel as support. Then, for the second body part, analyze the same two characters the novel in terms of Marxist theory. [There will be a lesson on Marxism coming up next week, be patient.] Again the body parts of your essay should be a critique of the bourgeois , the proletariats , and most importantly the petty bourgeois . How does wealth dictate actions and control over the characters? How are the characters “trapped” in their class status? Again, focus on the same two characters who illustrate two different class statuses. Quote and cite from the novel to prove your analysis. In your conclusion, present the value of the novel for today’s readership in terms of the theories. How is Madame Bovary essential to understanding and critiquing these societal standards and themes today, in terms of free will and class divisions?
