Description
In this paper, you are asked to critically analyze tourism advertisements. Choose a holiday destination and search for advertisements promoting this destination in various forms of media (e.g., printed ads, websites and commercials). You may want to focus on 2 or 3 advertisements. The body of your paper should include the following sections: Description of the advertisements, and analysis of the advertisements. * Please note: Considering the overall length of the paper, the body of your paper can consist of more than three paragraphs. Description of the Advertisements Describe the tourist advertisements (both texts and photographs/illustrations). Make sure to include points you are going to question in your analysis of the advertisements. Analysis of the Advertisements This is the most important part of your paper. In this section, you are asked to question the advertisements. Think about what the advertisements emphasize – in regards to, for example, the landscape, cultures and local people at the destination – and what they leave out that you as a tourism student would like to know. The questions you may want to consider for your analysis are: What do the advertisements promote? What is featured in the photographs or illustrations? Who benefits from tourism? In the case of all-inclusive holidays, do local people benefit in any way? Think of other questions you want to address in your analysis. Use the readings to develop your questions. Although you will probably not be able to answer all the questions, asking them demonstrates that you have read and thought about the issues discussed in this course. Objectives This essay is an exercise in critical thinking, in developing a thesis/a main argument, in synthesizing information from scholarly sources, and in properly acknowledging the ideas, wording and data of other authors. Sources For your analysis, you are expected to incorporate points (e.g., ideas, issues, concepts, and/or examples) from at least 7 different class readings, not 7 points from the class readings. For example, if you use 2 points from chapter 4 of Native Tours, this counts as 1 class reading. As class readings count those journal articles and book chapters listed in the course outline. Non-class readings and films count in addition to the 7 readings. The book chapters count individually; for example: You use chapters 2 and 4 of Native Tours by Erve Chambers, this counts as 2 class readings. Citations and Reference List You need to properly acknowledge other authors’ ideas by providing in-text citations and a reference list. Please refrain from citing references in footnotes or endnotes. Use one of the following two citation styles: Chicago style (author-date style) or American Psychological Association (APA) style. You are not allowed to use MLA or any other style. Chicago style (author-date style) APA style In your in-text citations, include the author’s name, year of publication of the source, and the page number(s). You need to include page numbers even if you use the APA style of citation. For example: (Chambers 2020, 3) – if you use Chicago; (Chambers, 2020, p. 3) – if you use APA. The reference list should be organized alphabetically by the authors’ last names. In-text citations and reference list should match, meaning all sources cited in the text need to be listed in the reference list and all sources listed in the reference list need to be cited in the text. If you use Native Tours by Erve Chambers, you can cite the entire book (i.e., you do not need to list the individual chapters). Because Tourism, Power and Culture is an edited volume and the chapters have different authors, you need to list the individual chapters. The sources required are attached in the “Upload Files” section. I also tried to add the book Native Tours but I could not download it as a PDF.
