Public School & College Shooting Composition

Description

College Shooting: Virginia Tech (Cho Sung Hui) April 15, 2007 Public School Shooting; Columbine High School,  Eric Harris & Dylan Kleibold Colorado (April 20, 1999) Using books: The School Shooter: A Threat Assessment Perspective FBI packet, PROFILES textbook chapter 3, MASS MURDER in the United States textbook chapter 11, Serial Murder textbook chapter 2 Write a college composition in which you prepare  the two different school shootings (public school vs. college school  incidents)  in order to come up with  two separate threat assessment and policy recommendations, and then compare and contrast the shootings:  ·      Identify each offender’s typology, the casual nature (why?) behind the crime, the importance of the location that the shooting took place in relevance to the crime, and how the media coverage of past school shootings had, if any, effect on the incident (shooting) that you are researching using the Four Prong Assessment (starts on page 10) found in your FBI “School Shooter:  A Threat Assessment Perspective” handout. Be sure to systematically consider EACH variable as outlined in the assessment report.    ·      Compare and contrast your two chosen shooters:  what typology is each (use Table 4.3 from your hand-out)?  How are they the same, and how is each different?  Does one typology fit your subject, or is he really a hybrid?   ·      Consider what factors affected media coverage of the two schools shooting you are researching and what that coverage says about society in general. Is it important that many of the shootings listed have not had any significant media coverage?     ·      Include a policy analysis of school culture and security (would metal detectors have made a difference? Better guidance counselors? Etc.), gun control, (what role did gun availability play? Would tighter laws have made a difference?), parental responsibility (should parents have seen the signs and intervened? Should parents be held civilly liable?), and access to internet sites and violent video games (what role the internet and website blogs and/or video games played in these crimes; to what extent could school shootings be averted by limiting teen access to internet and violent games?).   ·      Conclude by considering :  Is it different or more challenging  to do a threat assessment on a college shooter than it is a public school shooter?  Why is it harder, and should threat assessment be differentiated for two different levels of educational institutions?  If you were appointed the Czar of anti-school-shootings, what specific policy changes would you make to prevent or deter campus shootings in the future? ·      APA citations within the texts  and bibliography is a must!
