Description
What do you think of Aristotle’s view of happiness (eudaimonia)? In particular, do you agree, either completely or in some respects, with Aristotle’s view that 1) happiness is the ultimate end or good for human beings, and 2) a person must be (on the whole) virtuous or a “good human being” in order to achieve happiness? Explain your answer. In order to answer the above discussion question, you need carefully to read chapters 7-10 of Book 1 of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (pp. 50-58 of the abridged version of the Nicomachean Ethics in the Readings folder on Blackboard—DO NOT use any other translation). It will have to be clear from your initial post that you have studied this reading and that your understanding of Aristotle’s view of happiness is based on it. You may, if you like, insert one or two brief quotations from Aristotle’s text in your answer. Remember that your answer to the above discussion question is not an essay or a paper, it is a post to a discussion forum: you shouldn’t try to touch on almost everything Aristotle says about happiness, but rather 1) to understand, on the basis of the required reading for this discussion, what you take to be the essential points Aristotle makes about happiness and 2) to answer the discussion question on the basis of that understanding.
