Language and Literacy in Early Childhood Assessment – Literature review Due Date: 19 March 2021, 11.59pm Word count: 1250 This assignment requires that you read widely and engage critically with language and literacy literature in early childhood and think analytically (comparing, contrasting, identifying limitations and gaps) about the implications for teaching and learning. Your literature review should include at least 5 readings (UPDATE: This can be 5 course readings or 3 course readings and 2 additional peer reviewed journal articles). Five is a minimum based on the word count, we encourage you to include more – as many as you feel appropriately explore your chosen topic. Please ensure that you are identifying literatures that view the child as capable, that view that children are active, and co-construct their literacy development. Choosing a topic: A literature review aims to summarise, synthesize and critically review the literature on your chosen topic or question. A clear title, topic and/or question for your literature review will assist you to decide which literature is useful and relevant to include. Your topic – “Rich Pa, Richer Papa: Does the Socio Economic Status of parents have an influence on child’s learning and development in the early years?” By early years – choose age range between 0-2years or 3-5years depending on your research and availability of literature to support your topic. Please ensure that you are identifying literatures that view the child as capable, that view that children are active, and co-construct their literacy development. Writing your literature review: There is no one right way to structure a literature review. The attached guide will give you information and ideas about how to structure your literature review – see attached! Topic and Introduction •Title and topic are clearly defined •Relevance of the topic to language and literacy in early childhood is clearly stated Literature Review Discussion and Conclusions •Five or more course readings and/or peer reviewed journal articles are compared, contrasted, and critically analysed to summarise and synthesize research relevant to the topic •Collaborative and critical reading are demonstrated through engagement with Group Tasks along with keeping up with weekly readings •Gaps and limitations of the research are discussed •Conclusions and implications for teaching and learning are discussed Organisation, academic writing conventions and clarity •Overall organisation develops a flow within the writing •Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence and paragraph structure are used •Flawless APA 7th referencing Suggestions for structure for the Lit. review: – Organise your literature review according to an approach that best fits your topic. This means that you should not be too attached to an idea or template of how the literature review should ‘look’. – Seek out effective models of literature reviews written in your discipline area. How do they handle internal structure? A quick check of the Table of Contents should confirm the structure these authors have used. – Introduction: Provide an overview of the contents of the review. What is the significance and importance of the review? – Critically analyse the relevant literature: Synthesise the essence of literature that has dealt with your topic. Try and compare, contrast, and critically analyse the research that is available for the topic. Go on to consider any gaps or deficiencies, any inconsistencies or conflicting viewpoints and the broader implications of all this knowledge for your topic. – Conclusion: Draw together the important points and briefly explain how the information you have found addresses your original research question. Indicate if more research is needed.
