Description
World on Their Shoulders” Los Angeles Times Feb 10, 2021 “School Children Struggle” The Washington Post January 21, 2021 Try to read the articles closely, as if you were studying for a test. Don’t go outside the articles for research. Try to connect your preliminary conclusions with evidence in the articles, your “informed opinion,” but this paper is not the “final answer.” You create a document file then submit the file online right here. In a discovery essay, summarize and respond to the articles. Is there some debatable idea or comment you find especially interesting? [We call this a Fact claim] Play one article off the other? Is there a point of comparison you find interesting? [a Value claim] Speculate on the future and the pro and cons–where is the issue heading? [a Policy claim] Introduce the issue, then describe your inquiry process as you work your way through an article and the different stakeholders [people affected by the issue such as yourself–future professionals whose ability to communicate is important] and your own opinion as you learned about this issue. Be honest about your opinion. There is not a “correct answer,” just what you think. This paper is not meant to be a final answer or position on anything, just an opportunity for you to put on paper your thoughts and responses in a slightly more formal way than the class exercises. It’s like the first stage of the Research Paper, putting together a “Research Proposal” where you look at some sources and think about possible claims your Research Paper will go into.
