Correct APA format, double-spaced with 1-inch margins. 2. Knowledge of the etymology and historical development of the term 3. Examples of the term’s use in various written contexts 4. Ability to compare and contrast various uses of the term. 5. Use and citation of sources with proper attribution 6. Awareness of audience.   This assignment is worth 10% of your grade in the class.   10% for submitting final draft on time. 10% for submitting the outline 25% for including the etymology of the term (history and changes over time) 20% for identifying parts and stages in the process 20% for correctly citing three library-cited sources 15% for separating your text into clear paragraphs and proofreading final draft     What do we mean by an expanded definition? For this assignment, we are going well beyond the Webster’s Dictionary definition of a term. We want to trace the history of the thing we are defining, and point out how it has changed over time as our scientific understanding has changed. We will be quoting from and summarizing academic sources for this assignment.   What kind of topics make good expanded definitions? Choose something that is sufficiently complex that you won’t be struggling to come up with two to three pages of writing to define it. Processes are a good choice. Think immunization rather than the hypodermic injection. Think carbon dating rather than carbon. Be careful about going too big or too small in your topic choice. There may be too many aspects to solar radiation, for example, to define in under 1,000 words. But you might be able to define solar flares, or the kind of solar storms that disrupt earth’s electromagnetic fields. You might find climate change to be too big of a topic, but the greenhouse effect might be just the right size. If the topic that interests you most turns out to be too big, try to narrow it down by choosing one aspect of it to define.   What is etymology? Google it. We are talking about the origin of a term and how it has changed over time. For example, speciation: the way that new species come into being as the result of random mutation and the development of adaptive traits, has changed a lot since Charles Darwin first studied animals of the Galapagos Islands in 1905. The random mutation part was discovered much later, after the discovery of DNA. This is what we mean by etymology. It is both the definition, and how the definition has changed over time. Think: definition + history of that definition.   Final note: Please review the policy on plagiarism and academic integrity. It will be enforced.   Finding a Topic   For your Expanded Definition – choose a definition that is sufficiently complex to provide a challenge. In other words, not: “what is a lipid?” but rather, “what is a lipid profile?” Not: “What is a bridge?” but rather, “what is a suspension bridge?” What is a hydraulic lift? What are fiber optics? Most important requirement for this paper, you will need a much more detailed and fleshed-out plan.  How will you handle the historical development of the technology?  What applications of biometrics do you plan to focus on? What examples will you use?   Digital Technology:   What are biometrics?   For your Expanded Definition,  you will need to provide context and examples. If it is a human-made procedure, when was it developed? By whom? How has the process changed since its invention? What are the steps in the process? If it is a human-made object, when was it invented? Who invented it? What was it first used for? How has its use changed over time? What important adaptations has it gone through? What are its parts and functions?   If it is a natural process or phenomenon, when was it first observed? How was it understood at the time it was first observed, and what has been learned about it since?   If it is a problem, what solutions have been developed to solve it? How have the solutions changed over time?
