Description
Research: In argument essays, we often can strengthen our support by doing something counterintuitive: We give the opposition a chance to argue with us. In other words, we give what is known as a concession. A concession is a moment in the essay when we acknowledge the opposition’s opinion. We saw examples of this in Pollitt’s essay – she started each major supporting paragraph with an argument she disagreed with, and then proceeded to show why this perspective was wrong. Proving the opposition wrong is known as refutation. You need to include at least one instance of concession-refutation in your essay. [You may choose to do more, but one is the minimum necessary for the assignment.] Figure out what you think your opponent might say in order to disprove your opinion. [Keep in mind that this should not be a ridiculous or “easy” concession. Treat your opponents seriously – it will show that you have a strong case if you don’t shy away from strong opposition.] When you have figured out your concession, please complete the following: MLA format your document. Write your stance sentence at the top of the document. [Treat it like a title.] Then, use the Opposing Viewpoints in Context database and find two articles that show opposition to your stance. These will be your concessions. Create an MLA formatted end citation for each article using the citation tool. Remember that you still need to check your citation to make sure it is organized correctly with all information included. Next, use your articles to write 1-2 paragraphs that argue a concession to your stance. In other words, what argument might someone make to attack your position? Be sure you come up with the best argument[s] possible. Look at your stance again. Does any reframing need to be done? If so, revise the stance to make it stronger. Finally, write a 1 paragraph refutation that proves the concession wrong.
