Answer the questions on key concepts from Chapter 14 and Chapter 4 listed below. Read and evaluate the Opening Case of Chapter 4 “The History of Genetics” on pages 65 and 66 and answer questions 1, 2, and 3. Conduct “Mini” Research on stereotypes or race, ethnicity, or origin. Written responses must be typed, size 12 font, double spaced and written in proper English in complete sentences or bullet points accompanied by narrative sentences. Question/answer format should be used. Estimated total length of assignment 3-4 pages. (2 points) 2) If people of all races are almost genetically identical and race is really a socially constructed concept rather than a genetic one, why do you suppose humans find it so important to create barriers between different groups of people and different geographic boundaries, etc.? (2 points) 3) Scientists are consistently explaining that the planet Earth is one tiny speck in the vast expanse of the cosmos. If extraterrestrial beings (i.e., aliens) from another planet were to visit us next week, how do you think the ways in which we categorize all sentient beings (racial groups and nationalities from the planet Earth, and aliens from outer space) would change? Who would be in the in-group and who would be in the out-group? (4 points) MINI-RESEARCH: Research three (3) existing positive or negative stereotypes for a race, ethnicity or country origin of your choice. For each of these stereotypes: · Describe the stereotype. · Evaluate its validity (i.e. Is there any basis for the stereotypes?) · Deconstruct these stereotypes by proposing counter arguments to these stereotypes or rewriting the description of these stereotypes. · Describe how these stereotypes can impact people in the workplace. · Discuss how to manage these stereotypes, either positive or negative. Minimum one paragraph discussion answer for each of the three stereotypes. (18 points)
