“Sonny’s Blues”:

Description

Journal question on Baldwin: How do you interpret the narrator and his brother Sonny as characters? Giving examples from the story, analyze what you think Sonny might learn from his older brother (the narrator). Then take the other view, and analyze what the narrator might learn from Sonny. Don’t be superficial in your analysis. Delve into why, rather than simply making one brother “good” and the other “bad”. Refer clearly to instances or dialogue within the story to support your point of view. Required length: 2 typed pages Integrate quotes into your analysis where needed. Study and refer to the Use of quotes when writing about Literature handout posted here. Don’t overdo it, as you must have a thesis of your own.
