Required Readings:Gerald Graff: “Hidden Intellectualism,” They Say/I Say, p. 248-255Mike Rose: “Blue-Collar Brilliance, Think of a time where you learned something outside of school. Did you learn something from a particular job? Did a personal experience teach you a valuable life lesson that you could not have learned in a classroom? Have you learned an important lesson from a family member or a friend? Once you have an example in mind, you will use Graff’s and Rose’s arguments to help make sense of that experience.Summarize the arguments that Graff and Rose present. How do the writers show that education can take place in settings other than college and with any topic? What do “they say?” What evidence, or examples, do the writers provide to convey their messages? In what ways are their arguments similar and/or different? Then, bring in an “I say,” or your own opinion. Do you agree or disagree with Graff’s and Rose’s arguments? Why? How does your personal experience with learning outside of school influence your point of view?
