Description
Research Paper: Portfolio Collection of Relevant News and Articles: Students will regularly (weekly, at a minimum) follow political coverage of the midterm election(s) across multiple sources. While doing so, you should save at least 10 articles over the course of the semester (to be submitted as part of your portfolio). You ought to include several of each of the following source categories: 1.Major newspaper (e.g. The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times) 2.Political magazine (e.g. Politico, The Weekly Standard, The Atlantic). 3.Political science, polling, and/or forecasting (e.g. Monkey Cage, 538, CAWP, Cook Report, etc.) Students should avoid overtly partisan sources or non-credible websites. This is increasingly difficult and, when appropriate, partisan sources may be used IFF*you seek balance across partisan sources. If you have any questions about the categories or about specific sources, my first suggestion would be to ask during class (because one of your peers likely has a similar concern or question). Of course, you can also email me. I will post a list of sources to consider following on Canvas (though it will not be comprehensive). When saving articles, students should focus their collection on one of the following themes based on their interest and proposed research topic (or propose an alternative to me directly by email): 1.campaign strategy 2.campaign finance 3.mediacoverage 4.political advertising 5.social media 6.candidate traits/personality 7.political parties/ polarization 8.public opinion / the electorate 9.identity and/or group politics 10.polls & forecasting/ quantitative social science 11.the impact of political institutions A tip: you may wish to start saving all articles or links that you find most interesting and wait to decide on a specific theme or topic until you finalize your interest later in the semester. Optional or come up with your own topic then find articles. Using your saved articles, students will submit an annotated bibliography for at least 10collected articles with a paragraph written about each and how it relates to your thesis (i.e. your portfolio) and an outline of their proposed research paper (1 pg.; bulleted). Your portfolio is due Mon., Nov. 16(by midnight). After receiving feedback, this will become the basis for your research paper (1800 – 2000 words) which is due on Sunday, Dec. 13(by midnight). Further details will be provided. Syllabus ^ See the syllabus AND final paper guidelines for specific details on your final paper. This Research Portfolio is a type of draft. Using your saved articles from the 2020 U.S. election cycle, students will submit 1) an abbreviated annotated bibliography (10 collected articles with a short paragraph written about each. The paragraph should summarize the takeaway of the article and provide a sentence or two that connects or relates it to your thesis. 2) an outline of your proposed research paper (2 pgs. or less). The articles chosen should be organized around a consistent theme and your outline should clearly state your thesis at the topic and provide 3 main areas of evidence plus address at least one counter-argument. This Portfolio will become the basis for your final research paper and is due Monday, Nov. 16 (by midnight). Note: this is a graded submission that counts for 5% of your grade in this class. I have completed the portfolio and outline. Please structure it and turn it into a good research essay. Thanks
