Description
Media Analysis Paper (100 points) To demonstrate that you understand and are able to apply the concepts we have been learning all semester, you will watch a movie and type a minimum of 1-2 paper analyzing the communication behavior of a character or characters in the film. This provides a way for you to analyze others’ behaviors and to see how the dynamics of interpersonal communication work. Student Learning Outcomes Identify and analyze how verbal, nonverbal, and listening behaviors impact the effectiveness of interpersonal communication within the transactional model Examine relationship processes and theories and apply them to different relationship types Identify the impacts of culture on interpersonal communication and relationships Instructions Since I am requiring you to apply concepts and terms we have discussed in class to the characters and relationships, I suggest you take notes while watching the episode or movie, as you will need to support your claims. DO identify CONCEPTS AND THEORIES from class material that applies to the characters and relationships. For example, ethics, perception, stereotyping, culture, conflict, verbal and nonverbal communication, the self, relationship stages, family types, and disclosure. DO provide examples from the movie or show that support your references. Reference a term, apply it to the character(s), and then support it with an example. You are watching the movie through a communication lens. DO address relevant communication dilemmas that the characters face. DO offer advice as to how the characters could have handled communication dilemmas differently. DON’T give me a synopsis of the episode or movie. That is not the objective of the assignment. I don’t want to read a timeline of what happened. Spend all of your energy telling me about the characters, the dynamics that happen between them, as well as what influences have shaped them – in conjunction with the concepts from this course. You will need your textbook and class notes. DON’T try to cover everything. It is better for you to be thorough and focused than to touch on too many things on a surface level. It might be helpful for you to pick one or two characters to focus on rather than trying to address everything that is going on during the episode. This assignment is more about application and evaluation than about identification – be sure to include direct citations from the book, including page numbers! The paper should be 1-2 pages long, double-spaced, 12 pt. type. This should be in the form of an essay, not bullet points. Possible Topics to Consider We have covered MANY topics this semester, here are just a few to consider (give specific examples of anything you discuss in your paper [including page numbers]): What friendship types do you notice? How would you characterize those friendships? What family types are represented? Is there an example of Social Exchange Theory? Social Penetration Theory? Attraction Theory? What role does culture play? Give examples. What stages of relationships do various characters achieve? How do you know? What types of conflict do you see? How is it resolved? What non-verbal behaviors do you notice? Feel free to address ANY theory or concepts covered in class throughout this semester!
