From this experience, you will select a topic that deeply interests you as the focus for your research.  For example, if your experience was something positive that made you happy, consider researching “happiness” in relations to psychology or physiology. The same process can be applied to a negative experience.   Use the term that relates to the lasting impression as the focal point for your research. You may need to conduct a Google search before diving into the library, since doing research in the online library requires specific wording or search terms.  This essay will be a combination of different rhetorical patterns of writing (i.e. Definition, Example, Classification, and Comparison & Contrast).  Assignment: Think about a political, social, or economic event (local, national, or international) that may have defined a stage in your life.  Steps to building an Annotated Bibliography: Pose question based on your topic Ask a simple question about your topic, like “What is happiness?” Research log or journal Take notes on ideas you come across as your explore this topic Collect sources from library databases Save all the sources you come across so that you do not have to find them again. *Don’t waste time! Insert citation information from each source into a Word document This is helpful, especially when you are working towards a longer research assignment.   Read and annotate the articles Summarize, assess, and reflect each of the articles so that you have detailed notes on what you thought the first time you read the article. Write annotation for each source in the Word document Not all of your sources will work for your research topic. Even the ones that do not fit should be included in your annotated bibliography. This will help you keep track of all the sources that do and do not work, so that if you need to continue researching, you will not waste time on articles you have already read.  Assignment Requirements: 5 annotated sources All resources from the Library Databases (different databases required) Alphabetical Order MLA Style formatting Double-spaced Hanging indentation Template provides detailed information about how to annotate your sources (provided in “Formatting help, sample, and template)  Research:  Begin doing research in the HCC Library Databases  (Links to an external site.) Cite the source using MLA style. Describe the main ideas, arguments, themes, theses, or methodology, and identify the intended audience. Explain the author’s expertise, point of view, and any bias s/he may have. Explain why each source is useful for the research topic and how it relates to the topic. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each source.
