Medical Sociology Article Deconstruction

*Professor Instructions* For this paper, we will be deconstructing and reflecting on one full-length research article related to the Sociology of health, illness, and health care. I think it’s important for you to have a baseline understanding of how to navigate this kind of reading. In the assignment instructions I have listed the required components along with four article options from which to choose. If you have another peer-reviewed Sociology article you would like to use for this assignment, please contact me for approval one week before the assignment is due. Below are questions that, at a minimum, should be covered (in essay format) in your paper: Part 1: Introduce the research. Why drew you to this article? Describe the authors, the title, the name of the journal. How do you know this journal is credible source of information?  What is the goal of this research? In other words, what are the researchers trying to find out? Part 3: Theory and methods. Do the authors mention a/any theory/theories? If so, describe. What basic research method do the authors use (qualitative/quantitative)? Describe the basic method — you don’t need to go into complex statistical modeling. Was this the best research method, or would another method have worked better? Why do you think this? Describe the sample. How many people participated in the study? Where did the researchers find these people? Was this a good sample to study this phenomenon? Why do you think this? Use information from our lessons on theory and methods to inform this section.  Part 3: Findings and conclusions. What do the researchers find? (Summarize the findings.) Is this consistent with the hypothesis, or different? (Are the researchers surprised?) Did the researchers mention any limitations to this study? If so, what were they? How do the findings relate to our textbook reading or lesson on Medical Sociology? Part 4: Make some connections. Go find some recent (>5 years) news media coverage on the research presented in your article. The coverage does not have to be on the exact article, but it should be related to the subject. Reflect on the similarities and differences (try to draw on three points here) between the news media coverage and the research you read. Why should we care about this coverage? This research? Final touches: Provide one page for resources at the end of your document. You may use ASA, APA, or MLA formatting.
