Purpose Engage, Examine, and Evaluate Texts Task A close reading aims to examine and argue the significance or meaning of a work of literature. To successfully write a close reading, you will need to address the following: Examine the language and literary devices.  Ask yourself how the author uses language and how that might affect a reader’s response to the work itself. Pay attention to word choice/diction. Pay attention to details, patterns, and literary devices used (imagery, metaphor, tone, symbolism). Examine the form and structure. Where do lines break? How is the piece broken up into stanzas? How does the poet use the space on the page? What do these breaks and flows accomplish for the poem? For the reader?   Address the speaker. Who is speaking? From what perspective is this piece written? Who is being spoken to? What might be the relationship between the speaker and the audience? Examine the intended message. What is the overall purpose or message of the poem? What are the main ideas in the piece? What are some themes? How does the poem ask or answer a question or set of questions? Does the piece leave the reader with any kind of resolution? This assignment will be written using the following poem: Shire, Conversations about home.pdf Actions Criteria -A minimum of 2 pages is required (follow MLA formatting for headings, spacing, font, page numbers, etc.) -Follow MLA citation guidelines. Cite the work you use BOTH in-text (throughout the paper) and in the Works Cited page. You are not required to use any outside sources; however, any outside sources you do incorporate should also be cited according to MLA style. This is a draft and is worth 20% (10pts) of the overall grade for this assignment. However, it is not a rough draft. It is expected that you will write this draft as a formal assignment to the best of your ability. You will receive feedback and a grade and will be expected to complete an improved, revised version of this paper. They can be used strictly as examples to give you an idea of how to approach the type of writing expected in this close reading essay. These examples demonstrate that these students possess some level of competence required for the assignment and an understating of the reading material.
