Please view a sample of a previous question with the answer below : Q#7 pp. 86-87 Explain the reversal of roles that Douglass seems to want when discussing the underground railroad.  Douglass did not believe in  not just escaping himself but to just end slavery to save all, accoriding to Douglass “I have never approved of the very public manner in which some of our western friends have conducted what they call the underground railroad, but which I think, by their open declarations, has been made most emphatically the upperground railroad”(Douglass,1845,pg86-87) In other words, he honors those who attempted to save themselves knowing that they will not succeed but because of their bravery. Another quote that can also explain Douglass discussion about the underground railroad is ,“I would allow myself to suffer under the greatest imputations which evil-minded men might suggest, rather than exculpate myself, and thereby run the hazard of closing the slightest avenue by which a brother slave might clear himself of the chains and fetters of slavery” (Douglass,1845,pg86) .In other words he would rather suffer with all,than escaping on his own while leaving his fellow brothers  and sisters behind suffering, to me this is another quote that shows how much Douglass cared about his people and how much he desired to bring slavery to an end.
