Reading Response Assignment Tisdale, Prophetic Preaching In the definitions she cites, Tisdale emphasizes the role of hope in prophetic preaching. Describe the place of a “vision of hope” in prophetic preaching. In what ways does this challenge the view of prophetic preaching that you have held in the past. In chapter one, Tisdale talks about a number of barriers or obstacles to prophetic preaching. Choose the 2-3 that represent the biggest challenge to you, explain the barrier itself and briefly describe why it presents you with a challenge. Explain what Tisdale means (in chapter 2) by learning to read biblical texts with a view toward the “social/corporate worlds.” Choose a text that we traditionally read individualistically, and explain how that text would look from a social/corporate world perspective. Explain the difference Tillich makes (referred to in chapter 3) between genuine and “wrong” obstacles to securing a hearing for prophetic preaching. Choose a prophetic text or theme you might preach on, and then choose TWO “strategies” from Tisdale’s list in chapter 3; briefly explain the strategy and describe how you might use that strategy to gain a hearing for your sermon. After reading through the chapter on form (chapter 4), briefly chart out a formal structure you might use (from the previous question) to structure the prophetic sermon you had in mind. What do you see as the key point of chapter 5? What was your biggest takeaway from this reading? How does it change, challenge, or inform your understanding of preaching?
