Description
Find two cases from scholarly sources, one that fits with developmental theory and one that fits with critical criminology. 1. Explain how each of the cases you chose fit with the associated theories. 2. Explain how principle theorists from the two theories would view the cases you chose. 3. Explain how significant studies from those theorists relate to the cases chosen. You may use cases from the textbook or high-profile criminal cases for the two cases you are asked to examine in week five’s essay. Just be sure to discuss one criminal case (high profile or otherwise) that fits with development theory (e.g., life course theory, etc.), and one that fits with critical criminology (e.g., power control theory, etc.). Chapters 11, 12, and 13 in the textbook will assist you with this assignment. All three chapters describe theorists of the assumptions and significant studies conducted by the theorists. The cases may involve persons or groups. For example, you may use a case about gangs (or a gang member) and describe how the case fits in with critical criminology. The textbook also has specific cases that you may use for developmental theory. Question 2: Please use scholarly sources to explain how theorists of these approaches would view the cases. Remember, you may use your textbook as one of your scholarly resources. For example, how would Moffitt view the offender(s) in one case? Moffitt is a theorist associated with life course theory (development theory). You would do the same for a critical criminology theorist in your other case. Question 3: Examine how significant studies conducted by these theorists relate to the cases. For example, how does John Hagan’s research on power control theory (critical criminology) correlate with one of the cases you present? You would also discuss a study by a theorist of development theory.
