The purpose of this paper is to learn how to broach various aspects of multicultural identity, understand what those areas might mean for a person, and reflect upon how one’s multicultural identity might impact your counseling. For this assignment, you should interview a person who is culturally different from you in at least one area of identity. Select someone who you are not intimately familiar (in other words, do not choose your best friend or close relative). Below are detailed instructions for this paper and page limits. Part I (Multicultural Interview & Introduction -1/2 -1 page): Use either the RESPECTFUL or ADDRESSING model to interview a person who is multiculturally different from you in at least one area of identity. Select someone who you are not intimately familiar with (in other words, do not choose your best friend or a close relative). They may be of any age. You should ask questions related to each of the multicultural identities (you may include in an appendix the specific question(s) you asked for each aspect of identity if helpful). *Please make sure you have appropriate permission to conduct this interview if you choose someone that you currently work with. Please do not use the real name of the individual you choose to discuss.Introduce the individual you chose to interview with brief identifying information. Introduce the individual you chose to interview with brief identifying information Share why you chose this person to interview, how you obtained permission, and what model you used for this interview. Part II: (Multicultural Analysis 4-5 pages): Using what you learned from your interview, as well as relevant theories discussed through the course, describe and discuss the most relevant aspects of their multicultural identity and multidimensionality of their identity. In addition to multicultural identity, some aspects you might discuss depending on their relevant multicultural background and stage of development: Aspects of privilege and oppression Racial/cultural identity development Values, coping strategies, personal strengths held as a result of their multicultural background or life experiences. Prejudice/discrimination the individual may have experienced as well as certain privileges they may hold. How different aspects of their multicultural identity might express themselves in their life. Which aspects of their identity do not appear to be relevant or express themselves in their life? Part III: (Multicultural Assessment, Counseling, & Treatment 3-4 pages): Imagine this individual is a client of yours. Describe the specific theories, action/advocacy steps, and stance you might employ in therapy to specifically consider their multicultural identity. You should also discuss how both of your identities impact the therapy relationship, your work together, and what adjustments might you need to make in terms of how you work, if any? How would you incorporate specific aspects of the multicultural competencies in your work? What challenges might you face in your work with this individual? Any other personal reflection or observations as you consider working with this individual. General Guidelines: Must be in APA Format. Must include references and appropriate citations (also in APA format). NO abstract is needed. Please focus on the content of the paper. Your paper should be 8-10 pages (max) not including references or title page. Please use headings (APA format) to help organize the different sections or areas of your paper.
