Description
Individually students will research and present statistics, etiology, interventions and a case study for a psychological disorder included in the text (see chapters 15 and 16). This will be a traditional APA formatted term paper (maximum length of 15 pages). Submit the paper in PDF format. Please note that your instructor wants you to use APA 7th edition professional so that you include an abstract as part of your paper. STEPS TO GET YOU STARTED: 1. Your first step is to decide on is what your topic will be for your paper. You can choose any psychological disorder listed in the DSM-5 or that you can find in the textbook. The key is to choose something that you find interesting, so that you stay motivated as your research the topic. 2. Your second step is to set out your paper and create a basic format for the various sections required in APA formatting. Most word processors will have a ready-made template that you can use. If you wish, you can also purchase a program to format your paper (ie. Reference point software or Grammarly are some examples). Remember the following points from the rubric: 5 Points for APA Research Paper Formatting: Learning to write a proper APA paper is crucial to success as a college student. APA formatting will need to include Title Page, Abstract, Body of the Paper including headings sections and in-text citations, and References section. Minor errors in APA formatting will be docked at 1 point per error, so be sure to research APA (7th edition) formatting intensely. 5=No significant APA (7th edition) formatting errors (especially on the first 3 pages). 4=One minor formatting error. 3=Two deviations from APA formatting or missing a section. 0-2 = Major errors in formatting STEPS TO GET CREATING YOUR PAPER: 3. Your third step will be to write an introduction section (that will be page 3 [pg. 1 is your title page & pg. 2 is your abstract]). Your introduction should be a paragraph or two where you give a brief introduction to the psychological disorder you are writing about. 4. Your fourth step will be to write about the statistics related to the disorder. For this, you can research and write about the prevalence of the disorder. Who suffers from this disorder? What other disorders often occur with this disorder (that is called “comorbidity”)? How long does this disorder last etc. 5. Your fifth step will be to write about the etiology (that means the source or cause of the disorder). What does the research say about how this disorder forms? Where does it come from? 6. Your sixth step will be to write about the interventions that are used to treat this disorder. Is it better treated with talking to a therapist or taking a pill etc.? What are the chances of recovery from the disorder if you get a certain type of treatment? 7. Your seventh step will be to write a case study. For this, I want you to put a human face on the disorder to remind the reader that these are real people suffering. Just a few paragraphs about the story of someone living with the disorder is fine. You can use a personal experience (please do not use real names … but do not just make up a person), or find an example from research journals. 8. Your eight step is to write a short conclusion that summarizes everything that you have set out in your paper. Remember the following from the rubric: 5 Points for Psychological Content: The student will also be evaluated on the quality of covering material within the assignment. Ensuring that all the areas are covered with quality writing will form the basis of this evaluation. Minor or major errors in dealing with any of the sections will result in docked marks. 5= Student present statistics, etiology, interventions and a case study for a psychological disorder. All are well presented and supported by multiple peer-reviewed research. 4= All areas represented but at least one area was lacking in strong support from peerreviewed research. 3=Good coverage of the areas; but lacking the depth of current research literature. 0-2 = Lacking in multiple areas STEPS TO HELP YOU FINISH YOUR PAPER: 9. Your ninth step is to reread your paper to check for spelling and grammar errors. 10. Your tenth step is to rest for a day. Set the paper aside and do not think about it, so that you can revisit it with fresh eyes. 11. Your eleventh step is to go through the paper and do any final edits. 12. Your final step – convert your paper to a PDF format and submit it to the instructor. Remember the following from the rubric: 5 Points for Research Quality and Writing: The student will be evaluated on depth of research, and quality of writing. The research should include current, peer-reviewed journals. Ideally, the student should use two new peer-reviewed journals per page of text. The writing should be simple, clear, engaging, and free of errors. Minor or major errors, or an over-reliance on non-peer-reviewed material will result in docked marks. 5= Exceptionally written in simple clear language, with concise support and no errors. 4= Well written but with at least one area lacking depth, flow, clarity or organization. 3= Well written with a minor error or weakness in supporting material 0-2= Lacking in multiple areas
