is assignment is designed to sharpen your research and critical thinking skills, and to make sure you are making use of MLA citation style.  The Task) Select a topic pertaining  to one of the following:  a career you are interested in) you will use online databases containing articles and research, as well as quality web sites that inform your perspective on the topic.    Select 4 sources and create a carefully annotated entry for each.  In addition to your citation which should be in the correct MLA format, you will also write the following:   1. a short summary of the source, including             a. What is the general idea of the source? b. What is the thesis of the source?  c. What argument is the author making?  2. an evaluation of the quality of the source in terms of accuracy, authority, and overall usefulness 3. How the source is useful to you. Once you’ve compiled your annotations, you will write a 300-500 word introduction to the topic, based on what you’ve learned about the subject from the articles you discover.  If the topic is controversial, you might outline the controversy, and explain how the bibliography is useful in understanding.  If the bibliography is professional, you might explain how other knowledge-seekers might use the bibliography.  The introduction is meant to orient your reader to the topic, and to help them understand why you are researching the subject         Examples: Doe, Jane. “Technology, Culture, and Dread: An Analysis of the Terminator Films.” Technology and    Culture: A Reader. Doe makes several connections between the films and other areas of human activity, in which technology has seemed to take on a power of its own, or even become more powerful that its creators. The author argues that we have created a “narrative of dread” about our relations to all technology, but especially to computers and electronic media. I chose this article because it is well written and supports its thesis with lots of cited research, and plan to use this idea of the narrative of dread to examine the imagery in William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer. New York: McGraw Hill. 451p.   This college-level classroom text provides an overview of oceanography, marine organisms, marine ecology, and human relationships with the ocean.  Microbes are described in detail in one chapter but are again discussed in the context of different marine ecosystems. Prokaryotes and eukaryotes are detailed with descriptions of their varied metabolic reactions. Relationships of microbes to other organisms through symbiosis are highlighted as well as concerns of humans through plankton and microbial blooms.  The text also emphasizes how understudied marine microbes are due to research interests and the difficult of studying fragile organisms at sea. As a recent publication by qualified marine researchers and teachers, Castro and Huber, with extensive academic review, the information is current and valid. The source provides an excellent overview for the advanced beginner including glossary and appendices, but requires knowledge of basic biology and chemistry .
