What makes the use of a rhetorical device within one’s argument effective or ineffective? How do you evaluate the merit and reliability of information found in public discourse? Prompt : You will write a rhetorical analysis over an article which makes an argument on the topic of “misinformation” or “fake news” (or something closely related). You will locate the news article on your own. Your analysis will cover the effective and/or ineffective use (or lack) of rhetorical devices/elements such as: o factual and/or inferential evidence, o inferential relationship(s), o inductive and/or deductive reasoning, o fallacies, o argumentative structure, o rhetorical language, o and/or other rhetorical elements in your chosen news article. You will critique and evaluate your chosen article’s argumentative strategies (or lack thereof). Locate an article from the public discourse (accessible by most anyone on the internet for free) a. The article MUST address the topics of either fake news, misinformation, disinformation, or something similar. 2. Read your article, then read it again, all while actively taking notes a. Pay attention to rhetorical strategies and devices that you recognize within the article’s argument b. Write down your first impressions of the article’s argument and strategies/devices 3. If there are portions of the article’s argument that you think are missing information, conduct more research to locate texts that include the information that you think is missing from your article’s argument Chandler Fall 2020 ENG 112-001 a. This will provide textual evidence which you will need if you plan on arguing that your article’s argument is missing information or other perspectives 4. Compile and synthesize your notes from lectures and any notes you took while reading the article 5. Develop a timeline for when you wish to have certain portions of the paper completed by so that you do not procrastinate 6. Reread portions of the article that you plan on analyzing and evaluating for your paper 7. Begin outlining your paper a. There is an outline for the APD Paper in SRQ4 that all students will use… 8. Write a rough draft 9. Take a day away from your draft and have someone else read it to give you feedback (this can be anyone you trust, not just me—in fact, I encourage you to utilize Tutor.com or the ASC tutor center at this stage) 10. Revise your draft based on feedback and your own evaluation of your paper thus far 11. Edit your draft for grammatical and mechanical errors (there is a useful website called Grammarly which many students use for help) 12. Submit the final version of your APD Paper into Canvas, yay! 13. Upon receiving your grade, reflect on your writing process and the assignment itself so you may improve upon your writing moving forward for the next major paper. Structure : I would like students to structure their paper off of the organizational patterns I outlined in the Outline for APD Paper document in Canvas and as I describe below: In your introduction, you will introduce and summarize your chosen article’s argument. Then transition into your thesis statement which will indicate what rhetorical devices you will be analyzing and whether you determine the article’s argument to be effective or ineffective (it can be both). Your thesis will be your own argument that you are making about your article’s argument, its use of rhetorical strategies, and its effectiveness/ineffectiveness. Each body paragraph will cover one rhetorical device/element from your article. Each body paragraph will begin with a topic sentence which is created directly from your thesis statement. Then you will go on to explain and support your assessment of your article’s argumentative strategies using textual evidence, your own analyses and evaluations, and any necessary secondary resources. End each body paragraph with a “mini-conclusion” which reiterates the purpose of that paragraph and connects it back to your thesis statement. Additionally, be sure each paragraph transitions well into each other by using transition words or phrases at the beginning and end of your paragraphs. Your paper will end with a conclusion within which you restate the main argument of your paper (restate your thesis with fresh, new words) and a reiteration of why you think your article’s argument was effective or ineffective (or both, at times)
