The purpose of tertiary education is the production of individuals with the intellectual and
moral capacity to make positive social changes in their communities through actions and
practices that serve the people. It is the objective that inspired the concept of service learning in
the early twentieth century and one that has remained within the movement till today, especially
those in universities and colleges that subscribe to some of the ideological perspectives of service
to society. While reflecting on the main ideas that Daynes and Longo (2004) used to describe the
origin of service learning through the works of Addams and Dewey, I realized the importance of
promoting gender equality in education to the community, especially when high literacy have
substantial positive impacts on the growth and development of the society.
Interestingly, the experiential approach to educating students to become inspired and
motivated to render services to their communities is based on the principles of the gender roles
that women perform in their homes and neighborhoods. However, the most significant aspect of
this article on the origin of the service-learning movement that is promoting new models for our
educational system is the failure to adopt the experiential learning approach to the educational
system fully. While some form of community services are included in the curriculum, my
perspective is that this instructional delivery strategy should drive all courses including those in
the sciences. Also, the assertion is based on the benefits that are derivable from such an approach
since the Addams and Dewey were educated people that understood this role and applied to
achieve the changes in their communities and society. Therefore, the common question should
not be how we can change the educational system but what type of changes should be introduced
to make students become inspired to solve the problems that society face because it is their
responsibility to do so?

The author of the article uses her life experience to illustrate the melancholic state that old
age can result due to the aspect of the personal decision. Throughout the article, the writer
elaborates on the aspects that individuals might encounter in their old age and even advises on the
need of being ready for anything. I was encouraged on the concept that any single person should
come into terms with old age and even accepting the loss of loved ones. Additionally, people
should be ready for viewpoints such as failed memory, diminished vigor and aspect of reduced
sexual abilities.
I was impressed by how the author cared for her late husband during his last period of life.
Despite his constant sicknesses, she was by his side ensuring that he was carefully tended upon.
Her, husband had cancer which immensely affected his health condition but the author was always
at his side. Moreover, despite the miniature chance of his survival, she did not stop to cater for his
medical bills which had really escalated. The author was mostly by herself in handling the funeral
activities as some of her family members had neglected her. This is very motivating to people who
may feel that they have been abandoned by close relatives.
The writer advises the aged, the widows or those who have lost family members on the
need for stepping forward after disappointment strikes. Individuals should not expect to be totally
supported by other people but should ensure that they take the necessary steps in making their old
life more comfortable. For instance, she regrets causing trouble to her brother and daughter which
she could have avoided had she stepped forward much earlier. Moreover, it is of utter importance
for people to have a close relationship with the community so as to get a hand in case of disaster.
Old age should not be a hindrance to a good life.

The consequences of kindness remain clear especially to those that take pleasure in helping
others. According to Christine Carter, elderly people who engage in community service activities
experience a 44% lower risk of dying, simply due to the satisfaction and involvement in assisting
others gain from their assistance. For anyone who has been actively involved in such assistance
activities, it is always beneficial to interact with the society and realize an improvement in someone
else’s life due to personal input from their welfare. Although there are cases in which one simply
laughs at a joke to encourage the speaker, cases where one laughs at a joke because it is actually
funny have a greater impact on self than where one does the former. Ultimately, there is always
some form of fulfilment accompanying engaging in activities to help others without expecting
anything in return.
I once participated in a community service activity intended to paint a house for an elderly
neighbor within the neighborhood in China. The activity was a result of general intent to have the
elderly neighbor living in a habitable environment without any expectation of financial or any
other form of compensation. The community anonymously contributed funds for the project, after
which the young people in the neighborhood actively participated in cleaning and painting the
house. Although there was no material gain from being part of the project, every time I see the
patriarch on the front yard, a feeling of general contentment and joy leaves me smiling, knowing
that I contributed to the elderly man’s happiness in some way. Ultimately, several activities of
community service are bound to result to a much greater feeling of satisfaction, contentment, and
joy for making a positive impact on someone else’s life.

Willingness to be disturbed
The concept of willingness to be disturbed is very important in our lives. Naturally,
human beings like to be in their comfort zones and detest when others disrupt them. I have
personal beliefs and ideas that I don’t like others to challenge. However, in the course of
community service, I have realized that I need to be open-minded and listen to the opinion and
ideas of others. But to do this; I must be willing to be disturbed. It is true that no one can give us
the answers we need to the problems today because, we do not believe in them (Wheatley, 2002).
I work in meat on wheal, an organization that delivers food to old people and in the course of my
duty; I have met resistance from community members whose beliefs differ with mine. Most of
them are not willing to admit that they don’t know to make it difficult for them to find answers to
their problems. This is because we are brought up to be confident and strongly defend our beliefs
and ideas. I have witnessed several instances of disagreements during meetings due to
contradicting opinions and conflicting beliefs. I must admit that I do lack patience with those
who think differently and rarely have the time to listen to them, but for the sake of my job, I have
learned to accommodate others.
It is not easy for community members to give up our beliefs, ideas, and positions because
that’s how they have been trained. Furthermore, people are not physically identical, and each
person experiences life differently. Therefore, it is impossible for two different people to view
things in the same way (Wheatley, 2002). I have witnessed brothers differ openly yet they have
been brought up in the same environment with the same parents. This indicates that each person
has its way of viewing the world. However, for us to learn, it is not necessary to let go of our
certainties. Instead, we need to be curious about what others have to say. We should be ready to
sit and listen to what surprises us so that we can see our views. Whenever I listen to community

members without judging them, I noticed that they become friendlier and more corporative.
Therefore, community service workers should listen more and allow themselves to be confused
because, that way they become creative and find solutions to the problem in the community.
