This is the link where you can access to the book: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nYc89I84M3ESs9uI0… Your task is to write an essay in which you compare and contrast related readings
in Reading Critically, Writing Well:
David Bornsteins, Fighting Bullying with Babies (p. 415 – 418)
and comparing and contrasting the excerpts on bullying in Chapter 1.
In this 800 minimum word, three-draft, thesis-driven paper, you must use and
cite the two sources from the textbook correctly in MLA citation style in-text and on a
proper Works Cited List.
Comparing and contrasting related readings is a critical reading strategy useful in both
reading for meaning and reading like a writer. Comparing is to analyze what the essays
have in common; contrasting is to analyze how the essays differ. This strategy is
particularly applicable when writers present similar subjects, as in the case in the essay by
David Bornstein and the excerpts on bullying in Chapter 1 by Ron Banks (p. 4), Tara. L.
Kuther (p. 6), Tonja R. Nansel, et al (p.7), and Barbara Coloroso (pp. 7-8).
The genres differ the excerpts are cause-effect analyses and Bornsteins is
a proposal but like many proposals, Fighting Bullying with Babies includes
Choose one of the excerpts from Chapter 1 to compare and contrast to
Fighting Bullying with Babies, considering such topics as these:
The way the authors define bullying and establish that it exists and is
serious. For example, what do they assume readers already know about
Do they cite examples of bullying, and if so, how much detail do they give?
What kinds of evidence do they provide to persuade readers that the
problem is serious?
The causes and/or effects bullying has on the victims and/or the bullies
What similarities and differences do you find in how the two readings
analyze causes and effects?
How do they support their cause-effect analysis?
Analyze the rhetorical choices of the authors; is there a difference in tone
How are they employing the use of rhetorical appeals to engage and
persuade their audience?
What are the authors purposes and genres?
Review the Academic Habits of Mind Activity 3 in Chapter 1 to which you responded in
the beginning of the course. Who do you think the audience is for these two
authors? And do you think their audiences are the same?
How are the articles compared and contrasted in terms of the choices the
writers made to persuade their audience?
Compare and contrast the way these two authors try to influence readers.
Note: This is not a position paper about bullying, so the objective is to compare and
contrast the authors’ views alone, analyzing the content of both what they say, and the
rhetorical strategies of how they say it. You should remain objective and neutral in the
paper, so taking a stance on bullying is not the point.
Here is a good video about writing compare/contrast essays.
Here is a good article with outline examples about writing compare/contrast essays.
In addition, be sure to review the materials in the compare contrast module.
You must use and cite the two textbook sources correctly in MLA citation style, both in the
body of the paper, and on the works cited page. No outside sources are allowed;
when referring to the sources, avoid long quotes; use paraphrasing and summary so YOUR
VOICE is heard in the paper, while using the source as evidence to support your claim. Be
sure to review how to use quotes, paraphrasing, and summary effectively, and how to
integrate evidence into a paper while citing correctly.
Here is a template for creating your Works Cited List citation for EACH
author in MLA style for an anthology (a collection of articles in a book) in
which to insert the correct information:
Authors Last Name, First Name. “Name of Article”. Name of Book. Three
Editors names. Edition number. Publishing house, date published. Page
Note: The editors of the book are Rise Axelrod, Charles Cooper, and
Alison Warriner. Editors are NEVER listed first. Authors are listed first. Be
sure not to confuse the editors of the book and the authors of the articles.
Review Citing Sources. Take a look at RCWW:
pp. 497 508: Using Sources
pp. 509 514 Citing Sources
pp. 514 Works Cited List
pp. 506 -508 Paraphrasing
