Lecture VICTIM DEFINED The word victim has been used to describe essentially any person subjected to injurious circumstances beyond their control or provocation. VICTIM TYPOLOGIES The Violated Victim Victims of sex crimes, including sexual assault, sexual abuse, and sexual battery. The Assaulted Victim Victims of physical violence. Includes both active and passive victims, as well as abducted children. The Uprooted Victim Victims of forced relocation and deculturation following natural disasters and large scale-crisis.  The Passive Victim Victim of observing and vicariously experiencing another trauma. The Oppressed Victim Victims of economies, social, or emotional oppression or cruelty. VICTIM SERVICES Victim compensation No matter the type of victimization, there is almost always a financial burden to the victim. Victim advocacy Unfortunately when a person is victimized, their involvement doesn’t stop once the offense is completed. Crisis counseling Sometimes a victim is so traumatized by the events that immediate psychological interventions is necessary. Emergency legal advocacy Oftentimes these services are provided by the state’s attorney or DA in the particular jurisdictions where the offense takes place. Shelter/safe house Almost all medium to larger-sized cities have a number of shelters available for the victims of abuse.  In today’s society are we concerned for the victim, as defined in this chapter?
