SPF 203 Critical Reflection Paper #1 (15%) Guidelines We have spent the first month of class reading some historical texts that form the basis for current thinking about the role of schooling and of public education. You have learned to read from four frameworks (interpretive, critical, historical and normative).  The paper is designed to ensure that you interpret, synthesize and analyze the course texts. Your critical reflection paper should examine, interpret, and synthesize the main themes, concepts, and ideas from the weekly readings. Remember to rely heavily on your Reading Analyses. If you did a good job on your Reading Analyses you should be able to cut and paste ideas you had already, into this assignment. If you didn’t however, you’ll need to do that intellectual work here. Your task for Critical Reflection Paper #1 is to address the following questions USING YOUR READINGS Upon what ideas was our country’s public education founded, and how did those ideas impact how we thought about (a) learners and (b) learning, (c) teachers and (d) teaching, (e) the function of schooling and (f) the purpose of education?  Make sure to refer to and reference all authors read thus far in the course (and use APA citations).  Make sure you explain each author’s ideas (interpret) before you apply those ideas (synthesize) to answering the question above.  Make sure you hit all dimensions of the question (a-f) at some point during your paper.  Attempt to make connections across the readings and themes from the course.  Attempt to demonstrate use of at least three (3) of the SPF frameworks as you provide your analysis of these ideas (not the authors’ themselves) but of their ideas. Format: Your critical reflection papers should be double-spaced with 12 point using an accessible format (no serifs!). Follow the APA manuscript format (See Butler Library APA Guide). Length is going to vary. You know what “good” work is as well as I, so do your best work but if you absolutely need a guideline, I wouldn’t exceed 10 pages if I were you. Critical reflections must be uploaded to Blackboard by 11:59 pm on the day that they are due. Your critical reflections must be uploaded to Blackboard in the folder labeled “Assignment Submission.” Do not paste your critical reflection paper in the text box on Blackboard. You must upload a Microsoft Word document. This will allow me to provide you with feedback. Label your document file “Critical Reflection #1_First name.Last name” (changing the number as needed). You do not need to bring hard copies of your critical reflection papers to class.
