Description
Overview This assignment is the last part of a three-part sequence of writing assignments that collectively prepare you for the project-based actions that conclude the class. The goal of the Research to Action Argument Essay is to move readers to accepting your position on a topic as well as taking action on that issue (or at least seriously considering taking action). The successful essay will contain writing that is informative and persuasive; logical and reasonable; factual and well-supported. The Assignment Directions: Write an essay that includes the following: A title that predicts content and tone and captures the reader’s attention An introduction that includes a hook, provides background information on the topic, AND concludes with a clear, persuasive thesis statement and roadmap Body paragraphs that use clearly related topic sentences, relevant and credible evidence, and thoughtful explanations to support the thesis statement A paragraph before the conclusion that summarizes the importance of the issue A conclusion that restates your argument and calls the reader to action A works cited page that documents the sources used in the essay When completely revised, edited, and proofread, the essay should be between 1200 – 1500 words, use 5-7 sources, 2 of which may come from sources outside the ASU libraries, and follow all MLA guidelines. In addition to the MLA materials linked above and in Purdue’s Online Writing Lab, students are encouraged to review the MLA Resources folder within Macmillan. Information there includes a sample essay, sample works cited page, and a video tutorial about formatting your essay. Remember: Writing a research-based essay requires that you use research materials that are credible, timely, and pertinent to the point of your essay. Avoid the urge to do your research strictly with Google. Do not rely too heavily on any one source. Keep summarized, paraphrased, and direct quotes to no more than 10% of your total word count. Use in-text citations. And, finally, please also include web addresses for ALL online materials Requirements: Research to Action Argument Essay Follow MLA guidelines throughout 1200-1500 words Double-spaced, with 1” margins on all sides Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial 12-point font Essay includes an effective and engaging title Essay incorporates an introduction with a hook, transition, thesis, and roadmap Thesis is original, focused, and clearly stated Each body paragraph introduces a claim clearly connected to and in support of the thesis Evidence is well-selected, ample, and effectively analyzed in support of claims Sources are introduce with signal phrases, integrated, and explained accurately In-text citations adhere to MLA style guide expectations Paragraph of significance makes claims based on earlier evidence from the essay Conclusion summarize early arguments and calls the reader to action Essay is mechanically and grammatically sound The Works Cited page includes at least five (5) different, current, and credible sources. The Works Cited page includes at least two (2) peer-reviewed, academic sources. FOR THIS ESSAY: Working Thesis statement: Colleges should provide more resources for Neurodivergent students to help them learn to be successful and productive in life after college because they need more of a sense of community on their campuses than the universities are providing and making explicit. Research Question: Is advocating for support and investment of resources for the neurodivergent students in colleges and universities to learn a guaranteed method to be successful and productive after school? Proposal from annotated bibliography: The materials gathered in my annotated bibliography will support my working thesis by presenting insights on how the colleges or institutions should provide more resources to accommodate and support the neurodivergent students. This will ensure that they get out of school as more resourceful, successful, competitive, and productive individuals. The annotated bibliographies have shown different programs that can be implemented, the strategies of supporting these students, and essential groups that can help them transition to better adult life. The research on this topic matters because it will bring awareness, resources, and a sense of community for the neurodiversity student on campus, and my ultimate goal is to help make changes to the existing university system to be more inclusive and diverse, not only on a cultural level but also mentally diverse. My research implies that the insights presented will be implemented in many instances to help the neurodivergent students get the best from the resources invested for their success. The research further builds on and improves the issue because it creates awareness, provides options, and explains how they are useful to the neurodivergent group. I will help prove the importance of the issue by championing my research paper to be published and ensure I advocate through different campaign platforms for change in the institutions to ensure diversity is achieved.
