revised Argumentative Essay

The goal of this assignment is for you to revise and rethink your argumentative essay. Please read the following instructions carefully. The grade you will receive on the revised version will solely reflect your process of revising the essay you submitted originally. Thus, regardless of how good your original submission was, you will need to work hard to do well on this assignment. Genuine revision is more than simply correcting any errors you missed when proofreading your first draft, clarifying your language, or modifying elements of your essay’s organization (although it will involve all of these).  Genuine revision means reexamining and possibly rethinking your basic premises and conclusions, or even your entire approach to the question. This entails rereading the course readings that you drew upon, perhaps taking more of the details into account, exploring other approaches to their interpretation, or contextualizing them in new ways. Above all, it requires questioning your original essay in order to identify its strengths and weaknesses, so that when you revise it you can build on the strengths and try to eliminate the weaknesses.  Format: The requirements are the same as for the original submission (reproduced below), except that – At the end of the document you must include an appendix (maximum 1 page) explaining the changes you have made. The appendix should be in bullet points.  – If your original argumentative essay received a grade of 80% or higher, your revised essay may be up to 1500 words in length. Here are the original instructions again: The goal of this assignment is for you to provide a thoughtful argument for a claim about ethical business conduct. While you should consider both sides of the debate, you need to ultimately settle on a clear answer to the essay question. The focus of your essay should be primarily on moral, rather than legal, issues. The subject of your assignment should be the following question: Do business corporations have a moral duty to reduce their carbon emissions, even when they are not legally required to do so? Format: Your essay must be between 1000 and 1200 words in length (not counting the ‘sources-cited’ section). Your essay should begin with a very short introduction that clearly states your thesis/answer to the essay question (as a rule of thumb, this should be less than 60 words), and provides a roadmap of the main body of the essay (as rule of thumb, this should be less than 120 words). You should provide a short conclusion at the end of your essay that, again, states your thesis and your main argument for it (as rule of thumb, this should be less than 140 words). In the main body of your essay you need to argue for your position by providing reasons and responding to obvious objections. Throughout the essay, you should make use of the course readings. Citations: Avoid direct quotations. Summarizing and paraphrasing are best. You should rely mainly on the course readings. You may cite outside sources or the lecture slides, but neither is recommended.  Course readings should be cited by giving the author’s name, the publication year, and a page number. For example, you might write:  According to Solow, technological progress allows us to increase our standards of living without exhausting our natural resources (Martin and Kemper 2012, p. 5). To cite a lecture, you might write: As discussed in class (Lecture 8, slide 24), technology is ubiquitous in today’s corporate world Sources Cited Section: At the end of your essay you need to list the sources you have cited. Please use the APA format. For example, your list might look like this: Friedman, M. (1970). The social responsibility of business is to increase its profits. New York Times Magazine, Sept 13. Martin, R. and Kemper, A. (2012). Saving the planet: A tale of two strategies. Harvard Business Review, 1(April), 48-56. Narveson, J. (1995). The case for free market environmentalism. Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics, 8(2), 145-156. Von Kriegstein, H. (2021). Lecture slides for BUS 223. Ryerson University, Ted Rogers School of Management.
