Reader- response is a kind of criticism that asks that you think of how the ideas in this work pertain to what you know about the world and your place in the world. Your “gut” reaction to a work is important, but you must also discuss the work’s connection to the larger world.   Choose one article from the “Articles Folder” provided with the assignment sheet on Blackboard.   Part of your Intro must be a discussion of why you chose this article. Consider your general thoughts and feelings about the subject, and why you have those thoughts and feelings.   Then you must identify and evaluate two points in the article you find interesting (makes you think about a connection to other things, maybe differs from what you know or were told, etc.), and why.   Next identify a group you recognize is affected by the focus of the article—The Audience. You may not choose a vague “Everyone”; you must identify and state a specific Audience. Identify two points in the article, and evaluate why and how each point influences (Changes something about their lives? About their ideas? Their jobs? Etc.) this group.   Identify at least one point in the article with which you disagree; evaluate why you disagree. Also consider if your disagreement influences the Audience.   Focus on Point/ Illustration/ Evaluation. Use specific examples from the article to develop and support your evaluation throughout the essay.   Don’t forget your MLA, your Works Cited. Any time you use outside source information in your work, you must document your use of that source information.
