Description
Discuss how the linguistic conventions of e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging differ from more traditional modes of communication like letters, face-to-face conversation, and formal prose. Why do these differences exist? In what ways does this set new conventions represent a cultural shift? In what ways do preexisting cultural categories (especially formal–informal) persist and even give these changes their significance? And finally, think about stereotypes on how different people speak. Do you think stereotypes exist?
