Choose one of the following two projects to complete: Option 1:Pretend you are writing to a teacher or parent magazine or you are creating an informative pamphlet or brochure. 1) Choose an exceptionality covered in class. 2) Describe what the symptoms might look like within the classroom context. 3) Discuss appropriate accommodations/modifications and practical strategies (evidence-based practices) that teachers can implement to support student participation and learning. Choose one exceptionality from the 13 IDEA categories covered in class. Be sure to use people-first language since you are pretending to write something for a larger audience.   Option 2:Consider a student with or without an identified disability that is having difficulty participating in classroom activities or completing coursework (can be a student in the media, e.g., Parenthood). Develop a strategic plan (including specific materials and an implementation plan) to foster inclusion and active participation. **For both options, be sure to include adequate background information about the child, the exceptionality, and presentation of symptoms (what is getting in the way of learning). Discuss specific accommodations/modifications, practical strategies, and plans. Make sure that supports adequately align with the student’s needs. Include a reference list on your completed assignment (in text citations are optional but required when using direct quotes).  Make sure to put your responses in your own words as much as possible.  Reword ideas so that they represent your own understanding of the ideas.  If you are quoting another source use quotations and cite the source.   You can gather information from the class lecture slides/notes, assigned weekly readings, or additional references. Add citations if you are using the assigned readings or additional references. Be creative and have fun with this assignment. You are welcome to add examples to illustrate concepts. You are also welcome to add tables or visuals as supplementary materials (e.g., self-regulation scale) to help explain concepts, but you do not have to.
