Workshop 7

Description

Workshop 7 is a discussion on Populism, Progressivism, and the 1920s. The Populist Era and the Gilded Age can be seen as two sides to the same coin. A tension existed between consolidated wealth and the people at the ground level. After 1896, the nation moved into the Progressive Era. The Progressive movement involved various groups with often very different objectives. Many of the ideas of the Populist Era became public policies during the Progressive Era. Then, after World War I in the election of 1920, the nation shifted from Progressivism and its reliance of government oversight to more emphasis on private initiative. For this workshop, you will post a 600-700 word response to the following questions.  Forum Questions: Describe the relationship between the government and big business during the Gilded Age/Populist Era? How did Populists respond to this, and what did they advocate for? How is the Populist Movement different than the Progressive Movement? What were some of the major policy reforms of the Progressive Era? What changed in regard to the government’s position on Progressivism after 1920? Be sure to cite specific examples from the text using information from OTP chapters 17-21. How did policy reform shift during these time periods? Also, do you see any past-present connections here? If so, what are they? To cite the specifics, just put the page number in parenthesis after the sentence(s), like this (659). In your responses, offer your peers constructive meaningful feedback and constructive criticism. If you disagree on their viewpoint, state why in a respectful manner. The goal here is to engage in a conversation about history as we interpret the past. You may continue your responses and respond to more than two people.
