Project 1 Self Review Guide
Use this guide to give yourself feedback on Project 1. You will be asked to reflect on how this form helped you in a short quiz on D2L. I recommend printing out this guide and your rough draft so you can take notes, but if that’s not possible, that’s okay.
1.Review your introduction. Underline your thesis statement and check for the following:
A. Isthereathesisthatstatesyourevaluationoftheessaybeinganalyzed?Yourthesis
should indicate what the writer does well or poorly and a bit of why you think that. If you do not have a clear sentence that accomplishes this, mark where you can add it in and draft one using the space below or a notepad:
B. Inthefirstparagraphornearthebeginningofthepaper, doyouprovidethefollowing? If not, note where you plan to add this information in:
a. Full name of author, article, and place of publication for the article being evaluated
b. Name of article is in quotation marks (e.g. “Offensive Play”) and the name of where it was published in italics (e.g., The New Yorker)
c. A 2-5 sentence summary of the article being analyzed, indicating the author’s purpose and intended audience.
2. Review the body of your paper closely and complete the following tasks:
A. Gothrougheachbodyparagraphandlabelitsmainideainashortphraseorsentencein the margin. If it’s unclear what the main idea is, your paragraph might be too short or too long. Note where you might need to break a long paragraph up or add more information to a short paragraph.
B. Gothroughandunderlineeachtopicsentence.Ifoneisnotpresentorclear, write“topic sentence?” in the RIGHT margin beside the paragraph in question to remind yourself to add a topic sentence.
C. Analysis:Readoveryourpaperagain, focusingonanalysisthistime.Whatspecific elements are you analyzing (e.g. the use of ethos or the tone)? List those points of analysis here:
D. Now,gothroughandcheckforthefollowing:
a. Do you support your analysis with summary, quotations, or paraphrases of the
essay being analyzed? If so, label where you do so with an S, Q, or P as appropriate. If not, make a note here or on the draft as to where you should incorporate such evidence.
b. After identifying the evidence you’re using, check to make sure every summary or paraphrase you use is focused, its purpose made clear, and introduced with a signal phrase. If any of these elements are missing, offer suggestions on how to add these in.
c. Find any quotes you use. Are the quotes properly sandwiched (introduced, explained, and cited)? If not, indicate what is missing and make notes on how to improve your quote sandwiches.
E. Citations:UsingthePurdueOnlineWritingLab(OWL)orEverything’sanArgument, check your work for correct MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited entry at the end. Remember, paraphrases, summaries, and quotations from outside sources all need to be cited. Make notations as needed on your partner’s draft.
3. Review your conclusion: Ask yourself the following questions:
A. Doesyourconclusiontietogetherthemainpointsofyouressay,bothsummarizingthem
and showing the connections between the points? If not, how might you do this?
B. Isyourevaluationofthequalityofthestructure(nottheIDEAS)oftheessayyou selected to analyze clear? How could you make it clearer?
