Description
This research paper is to help you discover platforms for Texas political parties, official government sites for data and also to help you discover that there are professional policy periodicals. These journals or periodicals are where professional analysts publish their work to help others understand what a bill or policy means to the general public. When you see CNN or read the NYT, the reporters have gone to the experts in the field and read what the experts have stated about the issue unless they are the expert which will be noted in the article. The reporters you watch on TV or read in a newspaper use these professional articles to understand the issue for themselves and to then explain it to the average person. You are simply bypassing the news media and newspapers and reading for yourself what professional analysts have to say about the issue. So, when choosing a platform position or bill, choose what you are interested in. This will make your paper more meaningful to you. With the Democratic sweep of the White House and Congress, the Democratic Party is in control of our federal government. As such it is important for you to understand what the party represents here in Texas, what polices you think they will pass that will impact Texas and how the party has changed over the last 70 years. Your paper must compare and explain the Texas Democratic party from the 1950s and what the party represents today in 2021 by comparing and explaining what each position or bill means. In your conclusion paragraph you are to summarize in your own words the current Texas policy you chose and explain what it means to the state. 1. Compare one Texas platform policy position of the 1950s and one from 2020 – You can find this by going to the Texas party website and reading their platform positions from the past and reading the history of the party. (use the Texas Democratic website as your source for both platform positions: https://www.texasdemocrats.org/) (Links to an external site.) 2. Choose one bill the Democrats sponsored and passed in the 1950’s and one from 2020 or 2021 or one that is currently being debated. You can find this by going to the Texas website and searching past bills of Texas. (Use the Texas site for both bills: https://capitol.texas.gov/Home.aspx). Include the name and title of the bill. Just summarize the overview of the bill as the bill itself may be 100 pages long. You can choose a bill that is currently being debated if you want or one that was just passed and waiting for the governor’s signature so it does not have to be a bill signed into law unless you choose one that was just recently signed. 3. Research and explain what academic experts said that was good or bad about each platform position and bill. (Use only professional analysis articles from professional periodicals. One professional analysis article per policy and bill for a total of four academic professional articles. Use professional academic periodicals only – for example if the bill is about gun control then you must use a professional academic periodical on gun policy. 4. Conclusion: is your own words. Discuss the 2020/2021 bill you chose currently and summarize in your own words what it means to the Texas. Keep in mind you might not find a professional article from the 1950s. It may be from a later decade where the author explained the policy. That is perfectly fine. Just be sure it is an article written by an expert from a professional policy periodical analyzing a bill from that decade. The paper must have a total of six MLA citations as indicated.
