HSC 3502E Integrative Writing Assignment (15%) You will complete an integrative written assignment reflecting your understanding of adult or pediatric onset of one of the conditions covered this semester. In order to complete this assignment, you should read one book (fiction or nonfiction) or watch on e film (fiction or documentary) about one individual who has one of the following conditions: A. trauma (spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury B. burns or amputations C. blindness (visual impairments) D. deafness (hearing impairments) E. developmental disabilities ( acquired before the age of 18) such as a. cerebral palsy b. intellectual disabilities c. autism d. muscular dystrophy e. sickle cell disease f. hemophilia g. cystic fibrosis. Please organize your paper around the following topics: 1. Summarize the story of ONE individual’s experience, including critical incidents in acute care, rehabilitation and community integration (including school and work). 2. Analyze the person’s story accord ing to the components of the WHO/ICF model, including body function and structures, activities, participation, environmental factors and personal factors. 3. Describe positive and/or negative coping strategies employed by the individual as well as the impact (positive or negative) of soc ial support on the individual’s recovery. As appropriate, describe phases of adjustment experienced by the individual using the phases described by Livneh and Antonak (1997), adjustment and adaptation, etc. 4. Evaluate the individual’s overall response to dis ability as generally positive or negative and defend your answer with concrete examples from the story. Discuss your evaluation of the portrayal of the condition by this medium, and comment on the extent to which it was realistic. 5. Papers should follow APA style, 5 – 6 pages long (not including title page and references, typed, double spaced, one – inch margins and 12 – point font, using headings based in the four topics above.
