Description
In your essay you will want to demonstrate your grasp of the complexity of issues associated with medical assistance in dying for persons whose decision-making capacity may be contested. Support your arguments and ideas with evidence and reference to the course materials as well as the academic literature that you find on your own. You are expected to include at least eight peer-reviewed research sources that you find through a literature search. The paper should be between 2000 and 2500 words (maximum 10 pages, double-spaced), excluding the cover page and reference list. Use Times Roman, 12-point font, and APA style. Cite all sources used in your answer, and include a reference list at the end. The paper should be structured in the following way: A brief introduction to the topic of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) and its link to decision-making capacity. Briefly outline the law regulating MAiD and why the decision-making capacity of persons with mental disorders may be legally contested. Provide a summary of what you have learned from the course material. The introduction should describe how the paper will be structured (how your topic will be developed in later sections of your essay). (3/4 page) The body of the essay is the summary of the literature and presentation of the arguments posited by scholars on that topic. You should organize your discussion of literature around three main sources of controversies or problems that are associated with access to medical assistance in dying for persons with mental disorders. Acknowledge alternative views that you find in the literature. Pay attention to the qualifications and background of the sources you choose so you can identify possible biases in their viewpoint. (5-6 pages) Legal implications: Describe the legal solutions proposed in the literature. (1-2 pages) Conclusion: Identify and discuss the most important problems or challenges and the potential solutions (if any) presented in the literature. (1-2 pages).
