Description
The graduating senior is expected to complete a well-defined research paper (8 – 10 pages). The research paper must be interdisciplinary, demonstrating scientific and technological literacy, legal research and analysis, and policy analysis (economics, political science). It must demonstrate an ability to synthesize these paradigms, recognizing the strengths and limitations of each discipline. One of these areas will most likely be the major thrust of the paper, while the other two may take on a supportive role (providing essential background). Components – Literature review and analysis (e.g., empirical/theoretical literature dealing with a chosen topic, policy analysis, economic analysis etc.). – Contribution to existing body of knowledge (either via a new approach/methodology; updating existing methodology; using new/unique data set) – Unique attempt (i.e. cannot submit previously completed work, need substantive extensions) – Submit the paper in MLA format. Use section headings to logically organize the paper. Include title page and works cited. Objective The research paper will enable students to develop and demonstrate the following skills: Acquiring Information Formulating a substantive research question Determining information requirements Identifying, locating, retrieving information Evaluating Information and Knowledge Analyzing and evaluating information Weighing evidence for a position Synthesizing academic disciplines and perspectives Making reasoned conclusions Communicating Writing research papers Orally presenting research results Competencies specific to the project and major (e.g., economic analysis, policy analysis, statistical skills, analyzing external environments, organizational decisions and decision support).
