Description
Watch Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (1941; available on Swank) or Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth (2009; available on Kanopy). Then you will submit a two-page reflection paper (APA style) explaining how editing and sound design function in those films. Be sure to use specific details and relate to your textbook and/or external sources. If you don’t cite Movies and Meaning by Stephen Prince, I will deduct points. You must cite at least TWO scenes for full credit. Answer the following questions for which you’ll need those two scenes?: 1. If the film uses dissolves, fades, or cuts, how do they contribute? Choose one scene. 2. If your film uses sound bridges, ambient sound, how do they contribute? Choose one scene. Do not use terms like “personally,” “I think,” “I feel.” Treat reflections as if they were very short essays. Don’t evaluate these films (“Pickpocket is a masterpiece with great performances”). Avoid a casual, chatty, gossipy tone. Finally, your abstracts should mention in the first sentence what arguments you’ll make about one of the two films you’ve chosen. Read Chapters 6. from the textbook Movies and Meaning by Stephen Prince and cite the textbook on the Essay.
