Description
This is an essay, so it must have an arguable claim, or thesis statement! What are you trying to convince your reader of? You must quote directly from the reading at least twice (more is fine, but make sure you’re also responding and not just quoting . . . or summarizing). You can paraphrase from the source as often as you like. Respond directly to the assigned text. Don’t do extra research at this point unless you’re also willing to take on the task of and MLA or APA bibliography page. This is not a research essay—this is a response, and a step along the way. There are skills here to be mastered before the research stage—which comes next! Whether you quote or paraphrase, and even when you paraphrase, for this assignment you must include page numbers. (APA format does not insist on page numbers for paraphrases—although they must clearly be identified as paraphrases with reporting expressions, parenthetical references, and so on; but for this assignment, I want you to include them anyway, just for practice). Make sure that if you are paraphrasing, you understand clearly what a paraphrase is. A paraphrase is not simply changing a few words here and there. It is a digesting of the information in order to offer it in a form that fits in your argument. It’s nearly always a form of summary. As always, you need to use 12 point font, have standard 2.5 cm margins, and double spacing
