Our goal this week is to apply the theories provided by Durkheim and Weber to our current socio-cultural ethos. 1) Durkheim’s theory is functionalist and makes a point that religions evolve from a social bonding rather than a transcendent understanding of the divine. After reading this section, do you believe it is possible that religion evolved from an indigenous understanding and group ritual of totemism? 2.) Weber focus more on a modern understanding of religion. His most famous book is The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Do you see any connections between his theory and how religion operates in the United States today?
