Rubrics for book review: The following requirements should be followed closely. Deviations from these requirements will have consequences on the final grade of the book review assignments. General requirements: 1) The length of the report should be around three pages (excluding the cover page), double spaced with 12 point font size.  2) Generally accepted APA style should be followed whenever possible in the book review. Some examples are the italicizing of a book title, and appropriate cite of a reference (see a quick reference to APA handout). 3) A cover sheet is required to include the title of the book, author, publisher, reviewer’s name, date of submission, and other relevant information. It may look like the following except for the outer frame. Book Review 1 EDE 602 Spring, 2021 Title of the book: The Island of Blue Dolphins Author: Scott O’Dell Publisher: Dell Publishing Place: New York, NY Reviewer: John Lee Date of Submission: 02/19/21 Specific requirements: 1) The book review will consist of three sections (specifically marked by the subtitles): a brief summary, the rationales for using this book with upper elementary students, and your possible use(s) of the book with the students in concrete form. The summary will be around 100 to 300 words, which concisely summarizes the whole book plot to someone who has not read the book yet. Remember conciseness and clarity are both a mark of a good quality summary. The rationales should be clearly stated. Comments should be made to a book’s language difficulty level (which needs evidence and support), and its possible appeal to the appropriate students, therefore its instructional value. Special attention should be paid to the literacy instructional implications of the book (that is, what specific aspects of literacy could be taught through the book). Social and cultural values can also be addressed. The possible use(s) of the book allows you to use concrete literacy teaching ideas to realize what you have rationalized in the preceding section/paragraph. Therefore, this should always be linked with the rationales you have clearly identified in the second section of the review. To realize this, you will need to make the connection to the standards (list explicit standards from NYS next generation ela standards) and specific instructional strategies (You only need to focus on one). Careful editing and revisions of the review are expected. Editing and revision efforts would usually include the following emphases: coherence, proper choices of words, appropriate syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation mechanics.
