Description
You will choose from any of the literary criticisms that you explored from the new list within this lesson. Please note that you cannot use: psychoanalytic literary criticism, feminist literary criticism, Marxist literary criticism, OR historical literary criticism. This is your opportunity to explore a new literary lens. You will be writing a six paragraph essay analyzing the short story “Child of Snow” applying your chosen literary criticism focus. Below is a breakdown of what you will be addressing: Paragraph 1: Introduction with the thesis as the final sentence of your paragraph. Keep in mind that literary criticism advances a particular argument about a specific text,so literary criticism should be persuasive. The first step in formulating a critical argument is to assume a rhetorical stance that engages a type, school, or approach of literary criticism. Paragraph 2: Share your original thoughts about “Child of Snow.” What did you think of the piece and why? This is NOT part of the literary criticism. Your first reading should always be to absorb ideas and make decisions about whether you liked it or not. Keep in mind that your entire essay will be in third person, so you cannot use first person I in your writing. Consider that you don’t have to say: I really liked the use of irony within the short story. You CAN say: The short story is rich with irony. Paragraph 3: Provide a general overview of your chosen literary criticism. Paragraph 4: Choose one of the “Typical Questions” to address in paragraph form. You do not have to identify the exact question you are answering, instead your response should make it clear which question you are addressing. Paragraph 5: Choose another “Typical Question” to address, repeat the parameters for paragraph 4. Paragraph 6: Conclusion paragraph. Wrap up your ideas and bring your ideas together by sharing ultimately what the story encapsulates for your chosen literary criticism lens. Within your essay you will want to: Utilize MLA format for your paper and in-text citations. As part of the MLA formatting, double-space the paper and have proper heading information and headers. You do not need to include a works cited page, but for your in-text citations you will put in the parentheses and/or any lead-in to a quote or paraphrase “Child of Snow”. You do not need to include a cover page – your heading information of your name, my name, the course, and due date will be sufficient. You will need to have a title for your essay. Include a minimum of four quotes from the short story.
