Option 2: Essay To complete your essay, you will take the following steps: Step 1 – Choose 1 topic to compare and contrast: Causes of each revolution – Why were people so mad they wanted to overthrow their government or set up a new country? Leaders for each revolution – who were the people in charge and how did their decisions influence the outcome? Key documents that impacted or resulted from each revolution – Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution (American). Declaration of the Rights of Man, Tennis Court Oath (French). What ideas did these documents have in common? What was different between the French and American documents? Impact of the Enlightenment on each revolution – How did the ideas from the Enlightenment impact the thinking of the people during this time period? (U2L3) Result of each revolution – Both revolutions ended up with a change in government, but what were those changes? Were those changes stable or was there more political upheaval? Step 2 – Conduct research to find examples and evidence. Start with the eText and the lessons in Unit 2. After that, go to your Student Homepage and click on ‘Links’ at the top of the page. From there, you will find the following databases. You are not limited to these databases and are allowed to use resources from the internet. Please cite and list in a resources page any and all resources that you use: EBSCO Grolier Online Khan Academy Possible keyword searches: “causes of the American Revolution” “causes of the French Revolution” “Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen”, etc. Step 3 – use the Venn Diagram (attached below or draw one on paper) to list similarities and differences from your research. You will keep the Venn Diagram. Do not turn in the Venn Diagram. Step 4 – create a thesis statement. Ex. The American and French Revolutions had _________ and __________ in common and ___________ and __________ were different. What you put in the thesis statement is what you need to talk about. If it’s not in the thesis statement, do not put it in your essay. Step 5 – write your essay using APA style. What we’re really looking for are the reference page and in-line citation. Don’t worry about a title page, abstract, or headers. APA Style: Citing Sources and Formatting
