You must provide a tittle for this paper (California History Research Topic and Notes on the Spanish Flu in California)

Description

For this assignment, you will talk about what you want to write about for your history paper. This assignment is basically a rundown of what you envision for your history paper, which is due later this semester.   Q: But what should I write about, professor? A: You can write about any topic that relates to Spanish FLU California History before 2001 Assignment Directions: Please answer the following questions in your paper. You can break them out with subheadings, followed by your answer for each question. (I will share an example under each subheading/section. They are from different papers from different history classes, but the examples can give you an idea of the structure). REMEMBER, these topics are very broad so you will need to narrow down your topic to a time period, a location, an event or a figure.   Watch this video below if you need help finding a topic for your research paper     Your “Research Topic and Notes” assignment should be about 500-600 words and double spaced. This assignment will be graded on how well you addressed the 5 points below.   Title    Provide a title for your paper: __________________________________. (Please do not just write “history paper” or “Civil War” or “Native Americans”. Be more specific in your title. Think of what you would title it if it were a book or article).   For example, TITLE: “Unequal Citizens: The Negative Effects of Japanese American Internments”   Topic Paragraph (fill in the following information to make up your topic paragraph): I am studying _______________________________________________ because I want to find out (what/who/how/why)  _______________________________________ in order to understand (how/why/what)_________________________________________. The question I have is _____________________________________________________.   For example, TOPIC PARAGRAPH: I am studying Dolores Huerta because I want to find out what role she played in the UFW Movement in order to understand how women like her brought changes or actions for farm workers as part of the UFW Movement. The question I have is what role did Dolores Huerta play in the successes and failures of the United Farm Workers Movement?   The Formal Introduction/Thesis Paragraph (5 sentences): Draft a formal introduction, which introduces the topic and lays out your paper’s thesis and main points. Start with an attention-getter or scene setter. Then, give us a brief overview of what’s going on at the time (when and where in 1-2 sentences). Then tell us why this topic is important. Now state your thesis. Your thesis is usually one sentence that makes an argument or a case for your paper. It is what you plan to write about (make sure to write in third person).   For example, FORMAL INTRODUCTION/THESIS PARAGRAPH: Native Americans were seen as a threat, alien, and uncivilized to the Americans settlers in the early 1800s. Since they were seen as such a problem, the idea of civilizing them by converting them to Christianity, teaching them to read and write English, and adopt more Eurocentric values became their idea to solve their “problem.” But as America grew with their population, the need for more land grew. In the late 1820s, when Andrew Jackson became the president, he began to violate the treaties that kept some peace between the Natives and Americans and passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which called for the removal of the “five civilized tribes” in southeastern states and forcibly moved west of the Mississippi River. This act forced thousands of Natives to lose their ancestral land, suffer or die along the journey west, and adjust to a new area where they would be equally unwanted.   A note about developing your thesis in your Introduction: So, let’s say you want to write about the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 (Bakersfield had a big earthquake in 1952, which could be another great topic for a paper, by the way), but you are not sure what to argue about — the best thing you want to do is do the reading about it first. In either case, you need to write a paper that argues something about the earthquake for your paper.  For example, What were the causes of the earthquake? (The answer could be your thesis, which then becomes the focus of your paper)  What damages did the earthquake create for San Francisco?  (The answer could be your thesis, which then becomes the focus of your paper) What changes were made in building and health and safety rules, etc, as a result of the earthquake in San Francisco?  (The answer could be your thesis, which then becomes the focus of your paper) How did the earthquake lead to a health epidemic of rat infestation in the city?  (The answer could be your thesis, which then becomes the focus of your paper) ….and you get the point. But before you answer it, you must do your research and read up on the topic.   Watch this video below if you need help on how to create a thesis or argument for your paper     Historical Context Paragraph (5 sentences): You must provide background or context for your topic, or a description of an event, era, individual, or other related element (including the basic who, what, when, where) that helps inform and interest your reader. Be sure to write in your own words, but when you reference evidence, whether it’s a paraphrase or a quote, make sure to cite your source (MLA or Chicago Style is fine for this assignment). This section should also explain why this topic is important to history. i.e. Why should anyone care about this topic? What do you hope readers will understand? This comes from your viewpoint based on what you have found in your research. Make sure to be specific or provide examples. Cite your sources, too.   For example, HISTORICAL CONTEXT PARAGRAPH: The Indian Removal Act was passed by Congress in 1830 and signed by President Andrew Jackson. This act pushed five Native Americans tribes to the west so that new settlers can take over their land for property, farming, and other resources. As many Native Americans left peacefully, others resisted but were only forced to march west, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Natives (Library of Congress Research Guides). This topic is significant because the Indian Removal Act became dangerous for many surviving Native Americans and resulted in the loss of the majority of their land. My research so far shows that even though the Native Americans moved peacefully and accepted the move, they would still be forced to give their ancestral land and suffer or die along the journey west. Through this paper, I hope readers will understand how this act hurt many Native Americans.   Click on this Video if you need help on how to write your Historical Context Paragraph     Research Notes (2 sources) This part requires you to share TWO scholarly sources that you plan to share in your paper. This Research Notes part will provide a brief evaluation of your two sources (basically, an explanation of what makes it a good source for you to use for your paper). So, it should include the following points PER SOURCE: Source Citation (Please use Chicago Style Bibliography or MLA Works Cited citation when citing this part). One evaluation statement (aka why is this source important?) (1-2 sentences) One paraphrase or direct quote (1 sentence) One summary/statement how it can help your paper (1 sentence)   In theory, you should be able to put these directly into your paper, so write them with care.   For example, RESEARCH NOTES – SOURCE 1: Rose, Margaret. “Traditional and Nontraditional Patterns of Female Activism in the United Farm Workers of America, 1962 to 1980.” Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies 11, no. 1 (1990): 26-32.   Scholar Margaret Rose studies the intersection of power and gender to draw a deeper understanding of the female farm worker experience within the United Farm Workers movement (p. 26). She argues that female activists involved in the farmworker movement have been largely absent from history, whether it’s labor history or agricultural history or UFW history (p. 27).   In the article, Rose studies the roles of Mexicanas and Chicanas in the founding and management of the UFW and argues that campesinas (female farmworkers) assumed various responsibilities and roles that provided a solid foundation for the UFW from 1962 to 1980 (p. 28).   This source will support my argument of the important role that women played in the UFW movement. As evidence, Rose used scholarly journals, books, newspapers, oral interviews/testimonies and other sources, such as government documents.   RESEARCH NOTES – SOURCE 2: Ruiz, Vicki L. “Una Mujer Sin Fronteras (A Woman Without Borders).” Pacific Historical Review 73, no. 1 (February 2004): 1-20.   Scholar Vicki L. Ruiz examines female immigrants, Mexicanas and Chicanas who are active participants in the labor movement.  In this article, she argues that Luisa Moreno, a Latina labor and civil rights activist in the 1920s-40s, played a significant role on behalf of advocating for the working class and immigrants.   Through her research, Ruiz showed how Dolores Huerta played a major role in the UFW, eventually becoming one of the key leaders. In addition, according to Ruiz, other Mexicanas and Chicanas farmworkers left the fields to participate in the strike movement, work in the UFW’s health center and led organizing efforts of new members.   Ruiz’s research included interviews with many women who were part of the UFW and were involved in various decision-making roles that led to the success of the UFW in the early 1970s. Ruiz’s evidence supports my thesis on how the UFW needed women to further their cause.   Watch this Video if you need help developing your Research Notes Source Section   Watch this Video if you need help finding Sources or citing your Sources for this assignment     Some Closing TIPS: – Originality Make sure your writing reflects more of your own words and not just copy-and-paste information from the author.
