Reflection Paper

Description

SOC 365-V84: Sociology of Disability Reflection Paper The final project for this class requires you to draw on the course materials, discussions, and group projects to prepare a sociological reflection in which you describe and evaluate what you have learned about disability over the quarter, as well as a consideration of your personal agency. Basic Requirements: • A minimum of 1500 words (before references) • Times New Roman, 12-inch font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced • Proper in-text citations and a reference page (papers go through turnitin.com) • Submission of a working file (a Word document or PDF) through Moodle • Refer to the syllabus for general information about submissions and plagiarism. Guidelines: • This is your personal reflection on what you have learned about the sociology of disability during the quarter, from our course materials, discussions, and group projects. • More specifically, you should discuss: o Ways in which your perspective or thoughts about disability have been challenged or altered, or confirmed by the sociology of disability Consider misunderstandings, misconceptions, prejudices, stereotypes Consider assumptions and reactions Consider what you now notice that you previously did not Consider what discussions and topics affected you the most o Your thoughts and ideas about the possibilities for social change related to disability What can be done? What should be done? How should it be done? Use specific examples, not generalities Draw on group presentations, course materials, and personal observations o How you might exert your personal agency to make a positive difference in relation to disability. In other words, what can you do (or what are you doing already) to create or support positive change in society? What is your role in helping to construct a more equitable society? Keep in Mind: • This paper takes the place of a final exam. Therefore, you should use this paper to demonstrate what you have learned in the course. • This is not a research paper. You should not use any outside sources beyond course materials; if you do, you may receive a zero on your paper. If you feel you must use an outside source, discuss it with Dr. Savage BEFORE submitting your paper. The Reflection Paper is to be submitted through Moodle by 11:59 p.m. on the due date.\ Readings: Goffman, Erving. 1963. Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity.
