Module 3 Assignment:   1. For each document below, use the outlining strategy described on page 188 to list the topics that need to be covered. Then, organize your list into a formal outline (page 189) most suited to readers of this particular type of document. (See Figure 10.3 on page 190 for a visual example.)   a.Instructions for operating a power tool   b.A report analyzing the desirability of a proposed trash incinerator in your area    c.A detailed breakdown of your monthly budget to trim excess spending    d.A report investigating the success of a no-grade policy at other colleges 2.Find a document that is designed to be printed as well as read online as a PDF. (Hint: go to the Web sites of government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration.) Look for a document that is ten pages or less and print one copy of the document. After reading the PDF version of the document AND the printed copy of the document create a list of tips for writers who are writing documents for PDF delivery. The list should contain no fewer than 10 suggestions. 3.Use a document written for a course you are taking, memo, letter, or email you received from work or school. Review the document and note areas where the style and tone could be improved based on concepts from this chapter. Next, use autocorrect and/or a word processing grammar check program to compare your findings with the suggested changes made by these programs. Prepare a list of advantages and disadvantages of using these automated writing tools for checking and revising style and tone in workplace writing. 4.The following statistics are based on data from three colleges in a large western city. They compare the number of applicants to each college over six years. In 2011 X College received 2,714 applications for admission, Y College received 2,840, and Z College 1,992. In 2012 X College received 2,872 applications for admission, Y College received 2,615, and Z College 2,112. In 2013 X College received 2,868 applications for admission, Y College received 2,421 and Z College 2,267.   Display this data in a line graph, a bar graph, and a table. Which version seems most effective for someone who (a) wants exact figures, (b) wonders how overall enrollments are changing, or (c) wants to compare enrollments at each college in a certain year? Include a caption interpreting each version. 5. Compile a list of six Web sites that offer graphics support by way of advice, image banks, design ideas, artwork catalogs, and the like. Provide the address for each site, along with a description of the resources offered and their approximate cost. Compose a two page report detailing your findings. 6.Find an example of effective page design in print or online. Include a copy of the selection (two or three pages) with a memo explaining why this design is effective. Be specific in your evaluation. Now do the same for an example of an ineffective page design, making specific suggestions for improvement. Each memo should be at least one page in length. 7.On campus or at work, locate a document with a design that needs revision. Candidates include career counseling handbooks, financial aid handbooks, student or faculty handbooks, software or books, student or faculty handbooks, software or computer manuals, medical information, newsletters, or registration procedures. Redesign the document or a one- to two-page selection from it. Submit a copy of the original along with a memo explaining your improvements. The memo should be at least one page in length.
