1. Definitions: Select two (2) different definitions of group and state. 2. Theoretical Perspectives: Summarize the major concepts involved in each of the five (5) Theoretical Perspectives. These include field, social exchange, learning, systems, and psychoanalytic. 3. Group Observations: Observe two (2) groups (one task and one treatment). Record your observations in the following areas: a. Name, size, type and setting of the group b. Group demographics c. Group purpose d. Group goals e. Group process f. Group member roles g. Group leader(s) and leadership style(s) 4. Practice Implications List and explain three (3) social work practice implications that result from the group observation activity. 5. Format The assignment is to be presented in written format, 3-5 pages, double, APA style and summarized for a brief oral report. Rational for Group Observation Assignment This is a very basic assignment; students find it helpful in moving knowledge to action as they observe the different types of groups and analyze the groups according to the theoretical perspectives addressed in the class. The assignment requires the use of observational, critical thinking, cultural competency, integrative, written and oral, and assessment skills. It builds upon the students’ knowledge of social 1 systems and the range of social systems which individuals experience interactions and transactions. In addition, students will develop a working knowledge of the use of the eco-map. Students are to demonstrate practice behaviors related to “CSWE EPAS 2015 Core Competencies, Competency 7, Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations and Communities”. The specific practice behaviors are… “utilize conceptual framework to guide the processes of assessment, intervention and evaluation;” and “analyze models of assessment and demonstrate effective oral and written communication. CSWE 2015 Core Competencies Competency 1: Demonstrate ethical & professional behavior Competency 2: Engage diversity & difference in practice Competency 3: Advance human rights & social & economic justice Competency 4: Engage in research-informed practice & practice-informed research. Competency 5: Engage in policy practice Competency 6: Engage with individuals, families, groups, organizations & community Competency 7: Assess with individuals, families, groups, organizations & community Competency 8: Intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations & community Competency 9: Evaluate practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations & community
