For the midterm you will write 825 words (please list your word count) analytical essay.  Formatting requirements: 12 point, double-spaced Essay Question: Compare how two different countries have dealt with the immediate aftermath of Cold War human rights violations. Which steps have they been taking in the years following the peace accords and/or the end of the dictatorships?  Compare the different approaches and discuss parallels and differences. Looking back, how successful have those approaches been in your opinion?  Two countries should be one from Latin America (for example, Guatemala) and one from Eastern Europe (for example Eastern Germany).  *You should use the class readings that I provided as your source. Choose any sources, up to five of them to write about this paper. This argument should be presented in a thesis statement at the beginning of the essay, and then supported through the body of the essay through your use of the sources you’ve selected. Ensure your introduction is clear and states exactly what the essay will accomplish; do not claim to do more than you can.  Support your arguments by drawing on examples. Do not generalize/make sweeping statements that might sound good but that you do not substantiate. Ensure your conclusion draws your points together and relates them to the issue you have set out to explore.  Evaluation will take into account the following: organization; the development and clarity of arguments; your use of sources and referencing (citations, bibliography). Citation: Please use the Chicago Manual of Style author-date system of inline citations (do not use endnotes or footnotes). The parenthetical citation goes at the end of the sentence, but before the period.   For example: (Hayner 2011, 19). For every in-line citation, you must include a full reference in your Works Cited (Just add them at the end. It doesn’t have to be on a separate page for this essay).
