Autism Movement Therapy Evidence Based Practice for Occupational Therapy

Description

For this, you are to research a specific approach used in pediatric occupational therapy intervention. Select a specific topic of interest that you would like to research, perhaps an approach that you witnessed on fieldwork or one that has previously held interest for you. Note: You must get approval for your choice of topic with your section professor prior to proceeding with this assignment. Locate a minimum of 4 research articles from peer reviewed journals that address the approach. The articles can be either qualitative or quantitative. The articles must be published within the past 10 years & must address practice with children. You are to summarize the findings of each of these articles into a paper as identified below. In addition you will present this information to your peers in an informal format. Note: this should be a new area of inquiry for you and not one that you have already pursued.   Your paper should include the following with these specific headings: Description of the Approach: Provide a thorough description of the intervention approach that includes the population of children for whom the approach is used and how it is used within the context of occupational therapy. It would be helpful to include whether this approach is commonly used as well as if the individual needs additional training in order to implement the approach. This must be cited. Type of Approach: Critically discuss whether the approach is an occupation-based approach, a purposeful-based intervention, or a preparatory method with children. Be discerning here, based on your review of the intervention and observations of practice. Four Article Summaries: Use this format to present each study. The purpose of the study. Level of evidence of the study Procedures and methods used in the study Results and findings from the study Critical appraisal of the study (quality / relevance / applicability). The critical appraisal piece is the most important. Please refer to the McMaster’s site to guide your critique: http://srs-mcmaster.ca/research/evidence-based-practice-research-group/ & touch upon pertinent issues related to the study:  purpose, literature review, type of research, methods of research, # of participants / sampling, intervention (if quantitative), outcome measures (if quantitative), data collection (if qualitative), analysis, rigor (if qualitative), results, conclusions. If you are using a meta-analysis or systematic review, you may want to refer to the document: Critical Analysis Form for Systematic Reviews & Meta-Analyses on Engage in the assignment section. The end of each critique should address whether or not the information from the article is valid based on the elements of the study. Synthesis: Provide collective information on the 4 studies via comparison and contrast of the four. You should make connections here as to the similarities and differences of the four studies and their findings. Conclusion: Identify what the combined information should reveal to the occupational practitioner about the use of the particular approach as indicated by the evidence. State whether (or not) the intervention approach improved occupational performance (& which areas of occupation). Also indicate whether OT’s should use that approach to address occupational performance. Rate the practice using the Evidence Alert Traffic Light System (Novak & McIntyre, 2010, p. 388). Make sure that you pull in all 3 circles of evidence in this discussion. Novak, I., & McIntyre, S. (2010). The effect of education with workplace supports on practitioners’  evidence-based practice knowledge and implementation behaviours. Australian Occupational  Therapy Journal, 57, 386–393. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1440-1630.2010.00861.x Implications for OT practice: State how the information should be used in OT practice with children, their families / caregivers, and with other professionals. List at least 5 recommendations for how information from across the 4 studies should be applied, with regard to your traffic light designation (to use / not use / use with caution).   In addition to your paper to hand in, compile a one page handout of information for the audience that gives the APA citations for the articles and a summary of the findings. Please hand that in to your section professor in both hard copy and electronic formats in the Engage dropbox for posting on Engage. Bring copies of the handout for each member of the class and one for your section professor. Submit your paper to turnitin.com. Following submission to turnitin.com, any originality concerns should be addressed prior to submission to the Engage dropbox. Originality concerns must be addressed prior to submission to Engage, particularly those over 10%.   Grading will be as follows: Description of intervention approach is thorough                                                  4 pts Appropriate analysis of the approach in relation to occupation                             2 pts 4 or more appropriate & relevant research articles are provided                           16 pts Each article is succinctly summarized and presented and include the purpose, level of evidence, methods / procedures, results / findings, & critical appraisal.
